What is Cakelady and why was it formed?
My name is Maria Karalis. I’m a Greek Orthodox Christian, Wife, Mother, daughter, Registered Dietitian and the Cakelady. I love to bake and will bake and send you a blessed Phanouropita. Let me explain why.
In August 2023, I left a long career in the corporate world with no clue what I wanted to do next. Fast forward a year later, I started a medical nutrition therapy business in September 2024. I love what I do and feel that this is truly what I was always meant to do. While I was in Greece in 2024, I had a spiritual awakening and owe this experience largely due to Agios Phanourios. Agios Phanourios is a Martyr and Patron Saint and is widely known as the “Revealer”. Christians often pray to Him, to help find lost possessions or to restore health, reveal a life path or goal. The Story Behind Nutrition Made Simple >
When the prayer comes to fruition, a symbolic cake or Phanouropita is baked and brought to the church where it is blessed by the Orthodox priest and then distributed among the faithful in attendance. This cake business is my way of showing gratitude to Agios Phanourios and a way to pay it forward.
What is Phanouropita (the Cake) ?
Phanouropita is a vegan, citrusy, aromatic cake made with 7 or 9 ingredients. It is dairy free, contains no eggs or butter but does have gluten and nuts (a cake can be ordered without nuts). By completing the order form, you will receive a blessed Phanouropita. Upon receipt of your order, I will bake your cake take it to Ascension of Our Lord Greek Orthodox Church, where Father Sotirios will recite Agios Phanourios prayers with the names you provide. If you share your prayer with me, I will keep it in mind while making it, and pray to Agios Phanourios to help you.
What is included in the total cost?
The cost of the Phanouropita is $25.00, excluding flat rate of $10.00 for shipping, and includes my time, gas/travel to and from Ascension, utilities, packing supplies, shipping and ingredient costs. All proceeds, excluding ingredient costs, benefit Ascension’s Iconography Fund.
How long does it take to ship?
Please expect your cake to arrive in about 1 week. This allows time for baking, Agios Phanourios church blessing and 3 – 4 day transit time (don’t worry, this cake travels well). Upon receiving the cake, dust with powdered sugar, if desired, and share with those people you prayed for.
May Agios Phanourios reveal to you the paths of salvation and the treasures of His knowledge, show you the way of repentance and what is beneficial to your soul.
